Having trouble getting found on local search?
After helping nearly 150 home improvement contractors get more leads we have found that simple things like correcting your local business listings (local citations) can have a huge impact on your local search rankings.
A mispelled company name in some obscure business directory, an old phone number, or even an old address can have a large negative effect on your Google™ search returns.
The good news is, we can fix it!
What the heck is a Local Citation and why should I care?
What a local citation is:
In simple terms, a local citation is any mention of your business on the web.
The basic form of a local citation is what is generally known as NAP or name, address and phone number.
Why you should care:
According to Moz Loacl Search Ranking Factors, local citations are consistently one of the top 5 factors in ranking well on Google’s™ local search returns.
If your local citations are not in order and consistent throughout the web you may get pushed down on the rankings, lose valuable online reputation and even lose revenue to competitors.
Show me an example of a local citation…
In November of 2016 we closed our computer repair/IT shop to get back to focusing on what we love – helping home improvement contractors make more money. Obviously, knowing the importance of local citations, I made sure to check our local listings. I wanted to be sure we were listed correctly everywhere with our new phone number and address. Unfortunately, I never paid much mind to it after making the appropriate changes (I was too busy!).
In a recent blog article, Does Google™ Have the Wrong Number for Your Home Improvement Business?, I talk about how I almost lost a large five figure deal because a potential client found an incorrect business listing and couldn’t find my office. After this ordeal I went back and checked my listings again. I made the appropriate changes for a second time. I thought it was over. I thought I learned my lesson.
Funny thing – when I started to write content for our new local citation service I wanted to show a side by side example of what correct local citations look like. I figured I would use my own listings…I was in for a rude awakening!
What I found is that Yellow Pages™ (example on the left) had reverted back over the past year and a half and is now showing the wrong (old) information for my company while Manta™ (on the right) is current.
